New American Paintings Spotlight Archive: William Cordova by New American Paintings

As we continue working on a new and vastly improved NewAmericanPaintings.com, there has been a lot of time spent looking into our past. It’s been a good excuse to peruse older issues and all of the great work within. Also, in doing so, we recalled some great Spotlights that were in print and we think are worthy of another view. While the work may be a bit dated, the articles are still awesome. So in this new Spotlight Blog series, we’ll bring you some of our favorites.

To kick things off, we are going back to issue #86, released in 2010. Former Editor-At-Large, Evan J. Garza, interviewed William Cordova who was featured in our 2013 MFA Annual. Enjoy!

40 Galleries You Should Know if You Love Paint by New American Paintings

It is a simple truth that in any given month, if you added up all of the available space in commercial galleries around the country, the amount dedicated to painting would dwarf that of all other media. The list that I have compiled consists of 40 United States’ based galleries that have a proclivity for painting. That is not to say that painting is the only medium that these galleries show; indeed, most represent artists producing work in a range of media. All of them, however, have shown a particular interest in the medium over an extended period of time, and all have stables of artists that are at least 50% painters.

The list is obviously far from comprehensive, and I consciously avoided blue chip galleries such as David Zwirner and Matthew Marks in favor of younger spaces. Some dealers I have personal relationships with, and others I know only casually. If you love the medium of painting, these are all spaces that you should be familiar with.

New American Paintings’ Miami Beach Highlights by New American Paintings

For the past decade, Miami has effectively become the art capital of the world for one week in early December of each year. Spearheaded by the launch of Art Basel Miami in 2001, the city now plays host to more than a dozen satellite art fairs, and countless events and performances spread throughout the city. Hundreds of galleries from around the world participate in the various fairs and events, and they offer the unprecedented opportunity for art enthusiasts, collectors and art world professionals to consider the work of thousands of artists. Overwhelming? Absolutely. Fun? You bet. NAP Panel at NEXT Talk Shop by openstudiospress

We were thrilled to participate yesterday in CONVERGE Chicago: Contemporary Curators Forum at the Art Chicago | NEXT Talk Shop. New American Paintings Editor-at-Large, Evan J. Garza was the moderator for “Beyond the Stretcher: Breaking Down Spatial Limitations in Contemporary Painting, a panel discussion featuring Dina Deitsch, Associate Curator at the deCordova Sculpture Park + Museum, Dominic Molon, Chief Curator for the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (and the juror for NAP edition #85), and New York, Miami, and Lima-based artist and curator, William Cordova.

A packed crowd gathered to take in the discussion as throngs of collectors and fair-goers passed up and down the aisles of booths at NEXT. The curators discussed issues of material specificity and spatial concerns in contemporary painting practices, and examined the work of cutting edge artists whose work ignites a dialogue about sculptural and installation forms of painting. Beyond The Stretcher: NAP at Art Chicago | NEXT Talk Shop + CONVERGE by openstudiospress

In the dead center of NEXT‘s layout at Merchandise Mart this weekend, in what would otherwise be prime real estate for galleries willing to shell out big bucks for sprawling, centrally-located booths, is instead the Art Chicago | NEXT Talk Shop, the site of CONVERGE Chicago: Contemporary Curators Forum, a 4-day series of public panels and talks with major national and international figures from the art world.

Curator, critic, and New American Paintings Editor-at-Large, Evan J. Garza, will serve as the moderator for “Beyond the Stretcher: Breaking Down Spatial Limitations in Contemporary Painting,” a CONVERGE panel discussion with three prestigious curators, this Friday, April 29 at 6pm at the Talk Shop. As the practice of painting moves ever further from the confines of the canvas, it continues to pour over into sculptural forms, installation, and new media. Curators will discuss issues of materiality, multidisciplinary influence, and the spatial and material undertakings in recent contemporary painting practices. Panelists include: Dominic Molon, Chief Curator, Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (and the juror for edition #85 of NAP), Dina Deitsch, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art, DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln, MA; and William Cordova, (featured in 2003 MFA Annual, Spotlight #86) artist and curator, New York, Miami, and Lima, Peru.

MFA Annual – Where are they now? by openstudiospress

Not to toot our own horn, but there have been some pretty exceptional artists featured in the past editions of the MFA Annual competition of New American Paintings, many of whom have gone on to achieve significant international success. This month, with the 2010 MFA Annual Competition in full swing, we’re revisiting some of the strongest  and most acclaimed artists to be featured in the MFA book, including Chris Ballantyne, William Cordova, Jim Gaylord, Matthew Day Jackson, Elisa Johns, Lisa Sanditz, Michael Scoggins, and Daniel Rich. (Toot toot.)

CURRENT MFA CANDIDATES: Apply online through October 31 for this year’s competition, juried by Randi Hopkins, Associate Curator, Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston (ICA).
