NAP Southern Issue (#106) Sneak Peek by New American Paintings

The New American Paintings, Southern Issue, #106, is expected to hit newsstands across the US sometime in the next few weeks. Miranda Lash, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, New Orleans Museum of Art, juried the competition. Publisher Steven Zevitas notes in his Editor’s Note, “Miranda has made quite a splasjh in New Orleans since her arrival in 2008, having already organized fifteen exhibitions at NOMA. Her selections for this issue are broad, and include a few New Orleans favorites such as Jim Richard and Luis Cruz Azaceta. In her essay, Lash offers keen insights into the conceptual and aesthetic trens she detects in contemporary art from the south.” So pick up a copy and see her selections!

New American Paintings #104 Sneak Peak by New American Paintings

Within the next few weeks the Northeast issue of New American Paintings, #104, will be received by subscribers and newsstands across the country. Juror, Nina Gara Bozicnik, Assistant Curator, Currier Museum of Art, Manchester, NH, spent a week selecting the artists you see below. In her essay, Nina notes, “There is no one theme that unifies the works features in these pages, but rather a shared invitation to look, feel, and thinks your way through the dynamic terrain of painting today. I based my selections on the extent to which a painting engaged my eyes, mind, and heart. I hope they have a similarly provocative and inspiring effect on you.”

Northeast Issue #98 Sneek Peek! by New American Paintings

The 2012 Northeast Issue, #98, is now hitting newsstands across the US. We expect them to ship to subscribers in the next 1 to 2 weeks, so check those mailboxes! The juror for the Northeast issue was Dina Deitsch, deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln, MA.

Deitsch notes in her essay, “While the Northeast can be characterized by its cold weather, ties to the earliest days of American history, a collection of some very good schools, and perhaps, what is politely termed a Yankee frugality or better yet, pragmatism, the truth of the matter is that the art here bears no such defining characteristics. In the realm of painting, where the limits are the mind and hand, there is a remarkable range of forward-thinking ideas, subject matter, and technique. In the grouping of painters featured in this issue of New American Paintings you’ll come across works that speak more to the human experience—both local and global—and a broadening effect of thinking through painting as a material, as color, and less as a means to an end. This shift towards the materiality of paint seems to almost reinvigorate the medium, taking it into the space of the world itself.”
