NAP #101 Sneak Peek by New American Paintings

Within the next few weeks the Midwest issue of New American Paintings, #101, will be received by subscribers and newsstands across the country. Publisher/Editor, Steven Zevitas, remarks in his Editor’s note, “I have a feeling that this issue of New American Paintings might be a bit provocative to a portion of our readership on account of the ways it pushes the idea of what constitutes a ‘painting.'” Juror, Lisa D. Freiman, Senior Curator and Chair of the Department of Contemporary Art, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indianapolis, IN, mentions in her essay that, “Most of the works by Midwest artists chosen…challenge traditional definitions of painting or sculpture and instead explore a hybrid state that incorporates aspects of both…” We hope you will pick-up a copy and let us know what you think!

You can order this back-issue online or by calling 617-778-5265 x0

After the jump see a full list of the artists selected for the NAP #101, and a few sneak peek photographs of the issue. Enjoy!

For this year’s Midwest edition of New American Paintings, we are excited to feature Lisa Dorin, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at The Art Institute of Chicago, as this edition’s juror, and her selections reflect the exceptional quality of applicants from this part of the country. We are also pleased to feature Editor’s Selections with each competition’s winners, a handful of artists selected by our editorial staff, introduced in our last issue.

Peregrine Honig, Feathered Puke, 2010 | mixed media on paper, 15 x 10.5 inches

The Spotlight feature for this edition focuses on the work of Kansas City, MO artist Peregrine Honig, whose work conflates social hierarchies with fashion and art world affections. Recently featured as a contestant in the inaugural season of Bravo’s reality television series Work of Art: The Next Great Artist, Honig lets us in on her time under the microscope and the work the experience produced. (Read a sneak peek here!)

Also included is a brief Q&A with juror Lisa Dorin, providing further insight into her perspective as a contemporary art enthusiast, both professionally and personally, including descriptions of her favorite works in the AIC collection and her own. New American Paintings is excited to include her insights with this edition.

Featured a whopping four times in New American Paintings (Editions #29, #41, #53, and #71), Peregrine Honig is no stranger to the spotlight. In fact, her work frequently deals with the idea of celebrity, using popular culture and her gritty surroundings in Kansas City, Missouri as creative fodder.

We recently made plans to interview Honig for a Spotlight feature in Edition #89, and to our surprise we discovered she was selected as a contestant for Bravo’s reality television series, Work of Art: The Next Great Artist. The following is an excerpt from her recent conversation with editor-at-large, Evan J. Garza.
