Congratulations to Christopher Murphy (NAP #103)! He has been selected by our blog readers as the winner of the 2012 New American Paintings Reader’s Choice Prize. Out of the twelve exceptional “Noteworthy” artists that appeared in New American Paintings over the past year, Murphy was your clear favorite. In addition to bragging rights, Blick Art Materials will provide Christopher with a $500 Gift Card for supplies.
Murphy is still in the running to receive our Annual Prize as well. In the next few weeks we will be putting together a panel of jurors to decide who will receive that honor. The winner will receive $1,000 from New American Paintings and a $500 Gift Card from Blick Art Materials. Last year this honor went to William Betts. Keep checking the blog for details.

We make no qualms about how excited we get about Annie Lapin‘s work. Last year, she was the winner of both our first Reader’s Choice Poll and the inaugural NAP Annual Prize, selected by you, our very own readers, and a panel of prestigious curators. (As a result, you might have seen our video feature on the Los Angeles artist, shot by the man behind Future Shipwreck, our buddy Graham Kolbeins.)
Lapin’s current and much anticipated solo show for Honor Fraser in L.A. finds her at a pivotal point in her practice, where her interest in obfuscating figuration through a remarkable language of painterly abstraction has extended to chunky, fabric-heavy linen pieces and circular oil on panel works. While materially and spatially set apart from previous work, Lapin’s new series wholeheartedly reveal the explorative nature of her studio practice, weaving both mystery and meaning into the brushstrokes and fluid fields of paint that have become her trademark.

It’s official: it’s a sweep. In a remarkable first, in addition to winning our inaugural Reader’s Choice Poll recently, Annie Lapin has now been selected as the winner of the first New American Paintings Annual Prize. Awarded by a jury of seasoned curators and previous jurors, the NAP Annual Prize is a cash gift of $1,000, courtesy of the magazine, awarded to one of the 12 Noteworthy artists from the six editions of the past year.
The panel for the Annual Prize consisted of three previous NAP jurors who have not made selections in the last year, including Jen Mergel, The Robert L. Beal, Enid L. Beal and Bruce A. Beal Senior Curator of Contemporary Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Dominic Molon, Chief Curator, The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, and Ian Berry, Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs and Curator at The Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY. Noteworthy artists of 2010 nominated for the award included: Matthew Bourbon, Joseph Cohen, Megan Dirks, Jim Gaylord, Vera Iliatova, Mike Nudelman, Matthew Penkala, Chris Scarborough, Ellen Siebers, Amy Sherald, and Bart Vargas.
Annie Lapin and her work will be the subject of a forthcoming video collaboration with Future Shipwreck, which will appear here on the blog in the coming weeks. (If you haven’t seen our first video with Iva Gueorguieva, don’t miss it!) Lapin will also be featured in a solo show of her work, from May 21 – June 29, at Honor Fraser in Los Angeles, where the artist is based. You can see more of Annie’s work on the blog here!

The results are in. We’re proud to announce that after nearly 3,000 votes, the winner of the inaugural New American Paintings Reader’s Choice Poll is Annie Lapin! We asked our readers to vote for their favorite Noteworthy artist of the last year—twelve artists from our six 2010 editions selected by both the juror and our editorial staff—and the response was overwhelming. Annie is the winner of a $500 gift certificate from BLICK Art Materials, and we thank BLICK for their support.
Saying of the Los Angeles-based artist’s work, NAP president and publisher Steven Zevitas writes, “As with many artists of her generation, Annie Lain is deeply concerned with the fluid space between abstraction and representation. In her extraordinarily lush paintings, bits of the real world emerge and recede as they actively compete for dominance with the elements of her creation—surface, stroke, and color. Lapin’s paintings are about wrestling meaning from chaos, but they are equally about an unabashed love for the medium of painting itself.”
