Must See Painting Shows: May by New American Paintings

May is traditionally the last month of the art world “season.” As summer looms, rhythms change and many galleries choose to mount group exhibitions instead of solo shows. It makes sense, after all, why try to promote an individual’s work when your clients are scattered to various vacation spots around the world? Fortunately, many galleries are ending the season with a bang and presenting A-level solo shows by artists of all career points.

On the higher end of the scale are the exhibitions of established painters like Brice Marden, Bill Jensen and Carroll Dunham. All three are on view this month with shows that demonstrate the continued vitality of their respective projects. Dunham’s show and Blum & Poe in Los Angeles, which is effectively a retrospective of his works on paper, is not to be missed. Many feel that he treads too much on the territory carved out by Philip Guston, but this exhibition demonstrates a bewildering range of work and a pictorial language that is all his own.

New York is always filled with painting shows, but there is truly a lot to see this month. Lower East Side galleries have a number of shows with emerging artists who are pushing painting in all sorts of directions, Michael DeLucia, Noam Rappaport and Ned Vena, among them. At the artist run Canada gallery, Xylor Jane is just about to open an exhibition of new work; Jane is a fascinating painter whose compositional strategies spring from mathematics. Just over the bridge in Brooklyn, past New American Paintings’ cover artist, Ryan Mrozowski has opened a show at Pierogi that is well worth leaving “the island” for.

Chelsea boasts a number of great shows. Don’t miss the work of our old friend Chuck Webster at Zieher Smith; his latest paintings are an extraordinary integration of his painting and drawing practice.  Dana Schutz, the artist who many credit as having rejuvenated the activity of figure painting in the early 2000s, opens her first solo exhibition at Friedrich Petzel this month after migrating from her long time dealer Zach Feuer. There is no way to overstate Schutz’s importance. From our perspective at New American Paintings, she is one of the most important artists to emerge in the past decade, not only because of the quality of her work, but due to her almost instantaneous influence over a younger generation of painters. - Steven Zevitas, NAP Publisher

Must See Painting Shows: April by New American Paintings

More than twenty alumni of New American Paintings are featured in exhibitions around the country this month. If you live in New York City, be sure to catch Franklin Evans’ exhibition at Sue Scott Gallery. Evans continues to push the medium of painting in a way that blurs the line between painting, sculpture and installation. In San Francisco, Kate Shepherd is currently on view at Anthony Meier Fine Arts. I have been a fan of Kate’s work for many years. She has always exhibited an extraordinary sensitivity for form and space; her latest works continue this exploration with a variety of media.

As always, New York City has a number of notable shows. Two mid-career painters, Dan Walsh and Jacqueline Humphries, currently have very strong exhibitions on view. There may not be as many galleries in Los Angeles, but painting looks very good there this month. Emerging artists Daniel Cummings and Jeanette Mundt are both must-sees, and Jonas Wood’s show at David Kordansky is truly stunning.

MUST SEE PAINTINGS SHOWS: MARCH by New American Paintings

There are dozens of strong painting exhibitions on view in March. In the interest of full disclosure, I not only publish New American Paintings, but I have a gallery in Boston as well. I am very fortunate to have an show of new paintings by Peter Opheim this month. Opheim focused his energies on abstraction for more than two decades, but in 2010 his work took a radical shift. While he begins each work with by creating of a small clay model, his paintings are anything but “still-lifes”; rather, they are extraordinary mediations on the medium of paint and the activity of painting.

On a recent visit to galleries in New York City, I found myself captivated by the work of Donald Moffett at Marianne Boesky Gallery. The first impulse is to read his work as sculpture, but they are, in fact, paintings. For each work, Moffett offers a three dimensional context in which his finely wrought paintings exist. As he has done for years, Moffett pushes the idea of “what” a painting is to the breaking point. In doing so, he continues to open new territory for other artists to explore. MUST SEE PAINTINGS SHOWS: FEBRUARY by New American Paintings

One of the best parts of my job is getting to see the careers of artists that we have worked with take off. Artists such as James Siena, Amy Cutler and Matthew Day Jackson were all featured in New American Paintings long before they reached the international spotlight. This month is not only an extraordinary month for the medium of painting at galleries around the country, it is a particularly strong month for New American Paintings’ alumni. No fewer than twenty artists featured in past, or upcoming editions, have their work on view in February. Two of my favorites, Summer Wheat and Benjamin Degen, will be featured in the soon to be released 2012 Northeast Edition (#98).

I want to bring special attention to the work of Sarah McEneaney, who was first featured in the mid-1990s. Based in Philadelphia, Sarah is a profoundly gifted artist, and, in my opinion, simply one of the best painters working today. Her painstakingly crafted egg tempera paintings have always had a startling immediacy. Of the many micro-trends that are noticeable in current painting practice, a certain predilection for “faux-naïve” representation is high among them. Sarah was entrenched in this pictorial language long before it washed over the art world. Unlike many younger artists, her creative direction is not a conceptual gambit; rather, it is born out of an internal necessity. - Steven Zevitas, Editor/Publisher

Happy New Year to all of our readers. I am excited to present you with our first Must See list of the year. I am constantly getting feedback about the large number of shows that make it on the list each month from galleries located in New York City. There is no bias for the Big Apple, there are just that many exhibitions of note every month. This month, you will notice a large number from other parts of the country, including Denver, Seattle, and Kansas City. As always, we want to know who you feel should be on the list, so please give us your comments and recommendations. I try to be extremely thorough with this monthly review, but, needless to say, I am not aware of everything happening out there. If you think we’ve missed something, be sure to use the comments section. And, Let us know what you think of the shows below if you’ve visited them. - Steven Zevitas, Publisher

Must-See Paintings Shows: November by New American Paintings

We reviewed upcoming November exhibitions at close to 300 commercial galleries from throughout the United States to compile this list. Once again, it is another extraordinarily strong month for the medium of painting. Highlights include the feverishly painted work of Alison Schulnik at Zieher Smith, Nathan Hylden’s complex meditations on the studio at Richard Telles, and Llyn Foulkes idiosyncratic landscapes at Andrea Rosen. - Must-See November painting shows after the jump!

Must-See Paintings Show: September by New American Paintings

The art world comes alive again in September, as galleries reopen and collectors return from far flung locations. We reviewed upcoming September exhibitions at more than 400 galleries around the country, and there will be a lot of painting on view.

As is typical, many galleries are bringing out the big guns for the new season – from Agnes Martin at The Pace Gallery in New York to a well structured survey of Bay Area figurative painter, Nathan Oliveira, at John Berggruen Gallery in San Francisco. Among the shows opening by emerging artists, it is hard to ignore the trend towards abstract painting that has swept over the art world.
